Christopher Jones, Mayflower master: Overlooked, undervalued, definitely not bribed

It is unfortunate that this talented and generous gentleman of the sea, whose contributions were essential to the survival of Plymouth Colony in its most difficult infancy, has received little recognition.

When the Mayflower reached the shores of Cape Cod, the Pilgrims were within 60 nautical miles latitude of the Hudson River area, their stated destination, thanks to the navigational skills of Christopher Jones. He remained with them longer than the original agreement stipulated, delaying his return until April 1621. Without the Mayflower to live aboard while hastily constructing small dwellings during the first winter, more colonists would have perished.

Generations of Seafaring Families

Born about 1570, Christopher was part of a seafaring family from Harwich, England. His grandfather, Morgan Jones, had been a victular, provisioning ships of trade and discovery. His father, Christopher Jone Christopher Jones, Mayflower Captain (c.1570 - 1622 ...!
